PERMATANG PAUH: Two schoolgirls were injured after being hit by a motorcycle while crossing a road in front of their school this morning.

The incident occurred at about 7.20am as the girls, aged eight and nine, were crossing a pedestrian crossing while on their way to school.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah said police had detected a 30-second video of the incident circulating on social media.

"Preliminary investigations found that the two pupils were crossing the pedestrian crossing before being hit by a motorcycle ridden by an unidentified individual," he said.

Both pupils suffered minor injuries and received treatment.

Nik Aminuddin said police were investigating to identify the motorcyclist and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police urged anyone with information to contact the nearest police station or investigating officer Inspector Hafizi Mansor at 017-566 0103.

Nik Aminuddin reminded motorists to slow down, comply with traffic regulations and give way to pedestrians, particularly around schools and pedestrian crossings. - NST
