ALTANTUYA-SCORPENE: Do your worst, defiant Suaram tells BULLY govt
Seasoned local human rights organisation Suaram has remained defiant in the face of renewed investigation, this time under the notorious Sedition Act for its role in exposing the Scorpene submarine scandal allegedly involving the current prime minister.
The move comes after officers from the Companies Commission of Malaysia and Registrar of Societies probed the organisation under various laws including the Companies Act and Societies Act.
"They can't find anything against SUARAM by using CCM and ROS. Now using Sedition Act! Government your do your Worst, We will do our Best!" vows the group through a posting on its Facebook page.
The latest probe pertains to secretariat member Cynthia Gabriel, the person at the forefront of efforts to prosecute those guilty of the Scorpene scandal - said to be closely linked with the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder of 2006 - in the French courts.
Cynthia is being investigated under the Sedition Act for her role in a fund-raising dinner held two weeks ago.
"We believe that the Malaysian government is determined to clamp down on human rights in Malaysia through a sustained campaign to intimidate and harass SUARAM in retaliation for SUARAM’s whistleblowing role in the Scorpene submarine scandal, involving at least RM500 million in suspected kickbacks," said a statement by the group's executive director Nalini Elumalai.
Describing the latest probe as the "second round of political intimidation and harassment" against it, Suaram urged the government to stop further harassment, saying the police should instead focus on the recent sharp rise in violent crimes.
"We challenge the police to spend time and energy to curb serious crime in this country rather than trying to intimidate and harass Suaram," Nalini added.
