Sabah will work closely with police on crime watch.
TUARAN: Sabah’s Ministry of Local Government and Housing will expedite its programme to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in strategic locations in the urban areas in the state in the light of the recent increase in serious crimes involving firearms.
Its minister Hajiji Noor said however to avoid duplication and to find the most effective way, the ministry will work closely with the Royal Malaysia Police.
Speaking to reporters after breaking fast with councillors of the Tuaran District Council yesterday, Hajiji, whose ministry is in charge of local authorities (PBTs), directed them to submit their proposals to the Ministry for consideration.
“However, we realise that financial allocation is a constraint and we thus have to implement the installation of CCTV cameras in stages.
“So far, whatever allocation we have is from the federal government through the National Key Results Area (NKRA) initiatives for the prevention and reduction of crime,” he added.
Last Sunday, a Sarawakian businessman rumoured to be a drug dealer and cyber gambling syndicate chief was shot dead at point blanc range in Penampang whilst having drinks with friends at a coffee shop.
The incident was the eight reported shooting in Malaysia. Peninsular Malaysia had seen several shootings of high profiled personnel in the week preceeding the Penampang incident.
