'Did gov't have hand in TI-M leadership turmoil?'

Josie Fernandez has questioned if government intervention is behind her ouster as secretary-general of Transparency-International Malaysia (TI-M).

NONEFernandez (right), who has served TI-M for nearly a decade, told Malaysiakinitoday that she is worried that there may be ‘political’ attempts to wrest control of the organisation, which has often been vocal in pointing out corruption in government and business dealings in Malaysia.

She cited, as an example, the dispute that had broken out at a press conference on July 9, when she was stopped from talking to reporters.
The exco members later had a closed-door meeting with senior officials from Pemandu and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission who were at the press conference, she claimed.

Fernandez also questioned why the Registrar of Societies (ROS) had issued a letter on July 25 confirming her position as secretary-general after her liaisons with the Selangor ROS officials, while another letter from the ROS, said to be obtained from Putrajaya officials, had named Loi Kheng Min.

Both parties were called to a meeting by the Selangor ROS officials on July 30 and the matter is now under investigation.

NONEThe confusion over the post is thelatest twist in TI-M's leadership problems following the sudden resignation of Paul Low (right) as president to take up a ministerial post.

Fernandez warned that TI-M must strive to resolve its leadership crisis in an open manner and “without outside interference”.

"It is not about me or my position. The ROS has warned that if the exco is not able to resolve contentious issues, it will have to step in. Once the ROS steps in, it does not augur well because that is taking the organisation to a path of deregistration," she explained.

"Because we champion transparency, I want to openly say this: Is there political interference in this matter? Why was there an unholy haste to change the whole exco and yet still let me perform all my functions as the secretary general?"

‘Close ranks’

In a statement today, TI-M president Akhbar Satar had urged members to close ranks behind a new executive committee, which named Loi as the new secretary-general.

NONEAkhbar (right) also claimed that the exco members “were validly elected (on May 24) and duly confirmed at the EGM on July 20".

However, Fernandez disputed this version of events, claiming that she had been prevented from vetting the status of members at the EGM.

“Some members who should not be allowed to vote as they had not paid up their fees had voted illegally,” she said.

She also challenged the validity of the exco election held at a meeting on May 24, immediately after Low had tendered his resignation.

Fernandez said this procedure was not in accordance with the organisation’s constitution. She therefore wants both meetings to be struck out and a fresh election to be held.
