DRUGS LINK? Shot in the head 14 TIMES at Anson Rd traffic light on 1st day of Hari Raya

DRUGS LINK? Shot in the head 14 TIMES at Anson Rd traffic light on 1st day of Hari Raya
KUALA LUMPUR - Just as Malaysians were enjoying a leisurely break on the first day of Hari Raya, a man with a narcotics past was executed gangland style when he stopped his car at a traffic light at Anson Road in George Town, Penang.
He is the 34th victim of a series of shooting crimes that have swept across Malaysia since April 12, and the ferocity with which he was killed underscores how desperate his assailants were for him to die.
More than 15 shots were fired at the man, a 37-year-old Indian who lives in Air Itam. He was gunned down at point blank range at around 11.50am on Thursday. Police have confirmed 14 gunshot wounds, found mostly on the head.
According to George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng, the victim was driving a BMW car bearing a Kuala Lumpur registration plate, although it is speculated that the car was borrowed from a friend.
The narcotics link
Police also said the victim had 3 previous convictions for cases involving narcotics, prompting speculation of whether there was any connection between the latest  Anson shooting with several others that were also related to drug-trafficking.
"We slam any inference that just because some of the shooting victims have shady pasts, it is OK if they get shot by contract killers. This is a clear cut case of criminals getting the upper hand and becoming so bold as to kill in broad daylight," PKR veteran watcher Eddie Wong told Malaysia Chronicle.
"In fact, they must be very desperate to kill the victim in such a busy junction like Anson Road. People are starting to wonder if there is a connection to the drug syndicates. The police must check thoroughly and whether they are any links to the revelations made by Sanjeevan."
He was referring to crime activist Sri Sanjeevan, who is still in critical condition in the Serdang hospital after a similar gun attack in Negri Sembilan last month. Sanjeevan was due to expose police links with certain drug king pins when he was shot.
On Monday, a businessman - a Datuk Seri - also with a drug-trafficking past escaped death when a bomb attached to his car was detonated. The incident took place in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.
SpB gets additional 2,423 officers, crime-fighting only gets 583 officers
Prime Minister Najib Razak's government has also come under fire for failing to plan and manage public safety despite chunky allocations to the police force.
Najib has been accused of prioritizing police personnel to work on cases involving Opposition politicians and critics rather than to focus on beefing up crime-fighting units.
"The truth is, the Barisan Nasional government is gambling with the lives of the people and endangering the lives of our police officers on the front line because they stubbornly refused to allocate sufficient resources towards fighting crime," MP for Bukit Mertajam Steven Sim said in a statement.
"One week has passed and the federal government especially the Home Minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has not replied to my question on the sudden increase in the number of police in the Special Branch (SB). I have asked why between 2011 and 2013, there is a huge increase of 46.43% in the number of personnel in SB (including the Special Task Force) or an addition of 2,423 officers while the more critical crime-fighting Criminal Investigation Department (CID) only gets an additional 583 officers, a mere 6.24% increase in the strength of personnel."
"On one hand, the government has not given enough resources to the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to fight crime, and yet on the other hand, the government is clamouring to re-enact an Act similar to the Emergency Ordinance with the excuse that the abolishment of the Act previously has contributed to the rise in crime."
