Malaysian army personnel shot at Thai border

An army personnel has been seriously wounded after being shot at the Malaysian-Thailand border this morning.

According to a Berita Harian report today, the incident happened at around 4.30am while the army personnel was patrolling an area at Bukit Kayu Hitam.

Kedah Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Nashir Ya was reported as saying that the 26-year-old army man had discovered a hole in the fence where he was patrolling.

"While he was trying to fix the fence, the victim heard an explosion and ran.

"While he was running, he fell after being hit by a bullet from the direction of the Thailand border," he was quoted as saying.

The unnamed army personnel was taken to Hospital Tuanku Fauziah, Kangar for treatment.

The shooting comes just after proposals to form a Sabah-like security zone at the Malaysia-Thailand border.

South Thailand has been plagued by unrest as its Muslim minority has been in conflict with the government in the Buddhist-majority country.

In March, the Malaysian government formed the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) to improve border security with the Philippines after a group claiming themselves to be the Royal Sulu Army launched an incursion into Sabah.

Malaysia's security forces suffered a total of nine casualties, the worst since the Communist insurgency which ended in 1989.
