An elderly woman was killed in a fire at the Kampung Cenderamata illegal settlement in Sandakan yesterday, highlighting the risks and lawless culture in existence at the squatter colonies cultivated by illegal immigrants.
Free Malaysia Today reported that there are at least half a dozen illegal settlements along the coast of Batu Sapi, made up of local Bumiputeras and Filipino immigrants
They appear to be strong Barisan Nasional and Umno supporters, evident from the party flags flying from their roof tops.
Political influence and a seemingly toothless local authority have spurred the growth of the illegal settlements, which are built on state and private land.
The colonies have been associated with criminal and illegal activities and yesterday's incident has produced yet another risk - fire.
The portal reported that the houses in these settlements were erected too close to one another and the haphazard structures and arrangement caused the flames to spread rapidly and out of control.
The work of firefighters who arrived at Kampung Cenderamata yesterday was obstucted by these illegal structures and walkways.
The 73-year-old victim was identified as Tze Nah Kuayah, who was immobile. Firemen discovered her charred remains from the burnt down houses.
The Kampung Cenderamata illegal settlement is built on state government land and on a privately-owned property.
