MIC presidential election on Sept 22

MIC's presidential election will take place on Sept 22 with the nomination set to happen on Sept 1, the party announced today.

In a statement here today, the party's election committee chairperson K Kumaran said that should there be a contest for the top post, which is widely expected, the party polls would take place on Sept 22.

"The nomination is scheduled to be held on Sept 1 from 10am to 12pm," Kumaran said after chairing the first Election Committee meeting this afternoon.

Kumaran said that each candidate vying for the party's top post must file 50 nominations, with each nomination proposed by a branch chairman or a Central Working Committee (CWC) member.

The nominations should also have five seconders, also among branch chairmen and CWC members.

However, each branch chairperson or CWC member can only propose or second in one nomination alone, Kumaran said.

Party president G Palanivel is expected to defend his position in the party polls, but is expected to face a challenge from his deputy S Subramaniam, who is currently the Health Minister.

Palanivel is currently the Natural Resources and Environmental Minister.

In the last general election, Palanivel led the party to maintain its status quo by obtaining four parliamentary seats in the lower house.
