Man pleads not guilty to robbing KJ's house

A site supervisor has pleaded not guilty to charges of breaking into Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin's house on June 29at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today.

Syed Ali Syed Ahmad, 36, was charged with having broken into Khairy's residence at Bukit Damansara with two others at 6.30pm. He was arrested on Aug 5 for gang-robbery.

The trio had allegedly stole two laptops, an iPad, a box of watches, a handbag, a briefcase, a cellphone and a gold chain.

Upon conviction, he can be jailed up to 20 years and whipped. He was charged under Section 395 Penal Code and faces an alternative charge under Section 397 of the same law.

Deputy public prosecutor Suzanne Tiyone Bimen applied for bail to be set at RM20,000 with one surety.

Syed Ali, who was unrepresented in court, pleaded for a lower bail, on grounds that he had to look after three school-going children and his elderly parents.

Sessions Court Judge Dazuki Ali eventually set bail at RM15,000 and fixed Sept 13 for mention.

Previous reports stated that that Khairy and his wife were not at home when the robbers struck. The minister's maid was alone at the time when the suspects struck and brandished a parang at her.

At the time Khairy took to the social media to express gratitude that no one was injured during the incident and that rising crime was no longer mere "perception".
