Two videos on violence against women go viral

Two separate videos depicting violence against women have gone viral on the Internet after being posted on Facebook, with both incidents taking place in the presence of children.

NONEIn one incident recorded by a CCTV camera inside a lift in Penang and uploaded last night, a man is seen punching and slapping a woman in the presence of two children when the door closes.

He eventually kicks the woman out of the lift when the door opens, while pulling one of the children back in with him.

The other child is seen retrieving and returning the woman’s footwear and then running back into the lift. The man and the children then leave in the lift.

Malaysian Digestreported that the footage was uploaded by a Facebook user identified as Mohd Yunus AR, who claimed that the woman is his sister.

According to the report, Mohd Yunus blogged that his sister lodged a police report at Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam in Penang, but claimed that the police refused to act because there were no visible injuries and this was deemed a domestic dispute.

However, Bernamareported today that the police are looking for a civil servant in connection with the case, said to have occurred about 4pm on Monday in the lift of a private hospital in Bukit Mertajam.

State Criminal Investigation Department head Mazlan Kesah said the suspect, 36, works in Jerantut, Pahang, but that he has not been at his work place since the incident.

"The couple, from Penang, went to visit their oldest child who is undergoing treatment at the hospital and the (cause) of the incident is believed (to be due to) a family problem," he told reporters today.

The two children in the footage are aged four and five respectively.

Mazlan said the woman was injured on the wrist, head and face and is being treated at a hospital in Penang.

"We take a serious view of such a case and have sought an interim protection order to isolate the woman from her husband," he added.
Incident in Seremban

In an earlier unrelated incident, a video uploaded on Sunday shows a man using a hammer to beat up his ex-girlfriend in the porch of a house in Seremban.

NONEThe woman, identified as Lim Pui Lee, 29, reportedly required 30 stitches for head injuries, according to the New Straits Times

Lim, a food trader, reportedly said she and the man - who was detained by police and then released on bail - had been in a relationship for more than 13 years, but that they have had violent quarrels.

"My relatives advised me to record a video the next time I was abused so, when he started hitting me on Sunday, my (13-year-old) daughter took out her phone and recorded it,” she was quoted as saying.

Seremban police chief Assistant Commissioner Saiful Azly Kamaruddin reportedly said that the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

Impact of social media
When contacted, Women's Aid Organisatio executive director Ivy Josiah said the videos are proof of the positive impact of social media as an avenue to seek help.

"Domestic abuse victims normally suffer in silence so this has become a medium for them to cry out for help.”

Josiah urged the police not to wait until an individual lodges a police report in order to investigate such incidents, especially since there is widespread public knowledge of the videos.

"They shouldn't wait. They can lodge the reports themselves and start investigating," she added.
