What army of criminals on our streets? DAP pours scorn on Home Minister’s logic

Going by the Home Minister’s logic, the Malaysian armed forces and the UN peacekeeping force should be called in to help police combat 260,000 criminals who are roaming Malaysian streets, said the DAP.
Secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (pic) said this is what the government must do if Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is to be believed.
“If this outrageous number is true, then resuscitating EO-like laws will not help the police, but the army and United Nations peacekeeping force would be necessary to be brought in,” Lim said a statement today.
“This shocking 260,000 army of criminals is more than the combined numbers of police personnel of 112, 583 and the Malaysian armed forces of 124,000.”
On Sunday, Ahmad Zahid told Umno-owned Mingguan Malaysia that the police had reached this statistic based on 2,600 detainees released from Simpang Renggam detention centre.
“Each has his hardcore followers. If each of the released detainees has 10 right-hand men, this translated to 26,000 who are with them.
“Then these right-hand men have their own set of right-hand men. Multiply this with the earlier 26,000 and you have 260,000,” the Umno vice-president told the paper while reiterating that the repeal of the EO had brought about this situation.
Ahmad Zahid’s remarks to the Mingguan Malaysia came against a backdrop of a severe spike in serious crime.
In the week leading to Hari Raya, eight men were shot dead and the shooting spree continued during the Hari Raya holidays.
The Malaysian Insider reported on the first day of Hari Raya that four shooting incidents occurred within 24 hours, two in Penang and one each in Kuala Lumpur and Perak.
Lim said Ahmad Zahid had only announced this shocking number to justify the reinstatement of preventive laws that allow detention without trial.
“This number is shocking coming from a Home Minister and his maths in counting the number of criminals is outrageously exaggerated," said Lim.
He added that Malaysians want to see more resources used in terms of equipment and police personnel as only nine percent of the 112,583 in the police force are fighting crime.
“There are only 10,150 fighting crime. Hence, the public is pressing for Ahmad Zahid to increase the number of policemen fighting crime and patrolling the streets to 50 per cent of the police force, that is 56,000, for them to do an adequate job,” the Penang Chief Minister said.
“Is Ahmad Zahid fair to the police by diverting their strength from their core duties of fighting crime by requiring them to perform other duties, including monitoring and dealing with political opponents of Barisan Nasional?”
Following the shootings in Penang on the first day of Hari Raya, Lim’s government offered to pool its resources with the police to combat escalating crime.
Lim said no expense would be spared to ensure that Penang maintained its record of being one of the safest states in Malaysia.
"The state government understands the shortage of manpower and lack of resources the police may face fighting crime on the island," Lim said.
Penang is actively installing closed circuit television videos to marry manpower with technology besides encouraging the formation of Voluntary Patrol Teams.
