Ambiga: Zahid’s Rela warning broke many EC rules

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's warning to volunteer corps Rela to come out and vote in the Teluk Intan by-election broke "many" rules from the Election Offences Act, former Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan said yesterday.

Speaking at a DAP fundraising dinner attended by a bumper crowd of more than 2,000 at the San Min independent Chinese school, the former Bar Council president questioned if the Election Commission (EC) would act against Ahmad Zahid's offences.

"How can he (Zahid) know about the votes? Votes are supposed to be a secret. I can tell you many offences were committed today (Saturday), but will the EC act?

"That is why you need to go out and vote on May 31," Ambiga said.

Yesterday at the campaign trail the home minister at a rally held in a public school warned Rela members of the last general election, " I know who has voted and didn't vote,"

"So, this time, make sure that BN wins this parliamentary seat," he said, promising them new uniforms should BN win the by-election, adding Teluk Intan would be eligible for the RM1 million constituency allocation if the voters vote Mah Siew Keong.

For years opposition MPs have complained of the government denying them the quantum, that only BN parliamentarians receive in totality while opposition reps are given far less.

'Vote to reject violence'

Ambiga said she was sure that "discrepancies" would happen during polling day, and as such a high turnout was necessary to compensate.

She added the threat by Umno Youth members to "burn down" the DAP headquarters was a "threat without dignity".

"With your vote, you can say you reject the politics of violence," she said.

She said that DAP was "smart" to field Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud as their candidate for the by-election, and that Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) should be proud to have an alumnus such as her.

"This by-election is critical because we can witness a new political era, that will come because of Dyana Sofya," she added.

Among the other speakers at the dinner included PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and strategist Rafizi Ramli, apart from many top DAP leaders including Lim Guan Eng and Lim Kit Siang.
