Some 700 members of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad Workers Union (KPPKTMB) braved the rain yesterday demanding the ouster of KTMB president Elias Kadir.
Union president Abdul Razak Md Hassan ,who led the protesters outside the the KTMB headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, claimed the company's head had failed to perform.
"The demonstration today is to express our dissatisfaction with Elias who has been president for the last two years but failed to execute his duties effectively.
"Elias' responsibility is to find ways to improve KTMB's income and if he cannot do that he should get lost,” he declared during the protest,
He said two years was long enough and the union was disappointed over his failure to introduce new ideas on improving KTMB.
Abdul Razak warned that if Elias was not removed, the group will take their protest to the Finance Ministry at Putrajaya.
At the demonstration which started at 5pm, representatives ufrom 10 branches nationwide converged at Heritage Hotel before marching to the KTMB headquarters, just a stone’s throw away from Masjid Negara.
Protesters shouted "Reject Elias Kadir", accompanied by the blowing of whistles and the beating of drums.
They also sang their union song entitled "Inilah Barisan Kita" (This is our line) while waving their blue and yellow flag at passing vehicles honking in support.
Police presence was light as they helped regulate traffic near the demonstration site.
Even though the sky opened up some 20 minutes into the demonstration followed by the continuous rumbling of thunder, the protestors stood their ground. They finally dispersed at 7pm.
