Ku Nan: BN's chances not burnt by fiery protest

TELUK INTAN BN secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor is confident that the ruling coalition's chances in the Teluk Intan by-election will not be affected by yesterday’s Umno Youth protest in front of the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

He said this when met at the Gerakan operations centre in Teluk Intan today, where he responded with a blunt "no" when asked if the protest will hurt candidate Mah Siew Keong's support for the parliamentary seat.

"It's up to the police to take action if they find Umno Youth (members) have done something wrong.

"The country has law and order, so let the police handle this,” he said.

Where Umno is concerned, the party will question its Youth wing on the affair as their actions, in which they even threatened to burn down the building, were "unethical".

“We will definitely ask them why they are doing these sort of things, because it’s unethetical. To us, we want a peaceful country, you know?

He said the party will take action against the group if they were found to have breached party discipline.

“The one who does this is the opposition, they will go on the street, instigate the rakyat and demonstrate. This is the job of the opposition, not the government.

“We know, the opposition will use its immunity in the House, they will say anything. Let them talk, we know they are insane (tak siuman), their minds are not stable,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter what they want to call us, let them, as long as the people know we are a party committed to performing our duty as a government which help the people.”

Yesterday, some 50 Umno Youth membersprotested in front of the DAP headquarters after DAP Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer refused to apologise for his "celaka" remarkdelivered at the Penang legislative assembly sitting.

The group tried to tear down a signboard which featured the opposition party's Rocket logo and threatened to burn down the building should such "insults" be repeated.

This is despite Rayer clarifying that his statement was not directed at all Umno members but only at Kepala Batas MP Reezal Merican Naina Merican and two other Umno leaders who took part in the January protest against DAP's Lee Khai Loon's ‘I Love Kangkung’ flash mob.

Yesterday's protest came in the wake of an equally fiery one in Penang on Wednesday, in which Umno Youth members barged into the Penang state assembly hall in search of Rayer.
