If elected as member of parliament on May 31, Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong will the first Teluk Intan native to be appointed cabinet minister in 50 years.
This was the message delivered by Umno campaigner Faizal Effendi Hassim(left), who campaigned solo via loudspeaker at the Taman Indah Jaya in the Perak constituency today.
"Fifty years ago, a representative had been chosen as a full cabinet minister, but the last 50 years Teluk Intan people never had any full minister," the Umno Parit member said.
"Please believe (us), if BN candidate takes the seat, Mah will be chosen as a full minister," he said in his two-minute speech.
When asked later how he is privy of Mah (right in photo) potential appointment to cabinet, said that this is as former Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koo was then also made full minister due to his post.
Clad in a dark blue BN T-shirt, Effendi, who is also former Perak PKR Youth leader, was alone but said that he arrived in the constituency before nomination day with a group of 30.
The group has been using this campaign method for the past four days, where they travel to different parts of the constituency and deliver solo speeches four times a day.
This is in line with Gerakan's low key campaign style, with the party eschewing the big banquets and carnivals often used by BN parties in elections.
Gerakan campaigners also told Malaysiakini that the party, too, is sending the message that Mah would end the 50-year drought of a Teluk Intan local in cabinet.
Kit comes to Dyana's rescue
Effendi's speech came soon after DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud's walkabout at the night market with DAP supremo and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang.
The usually cheerful Dyana, was, however, taken by surprise when a voter strenously urged her to move to Teluk Intan if she wins the polls.
“I can vote for you, with one (condition), you stay in Teluk Intan. Don't just rely on Terence Naidu," said voter Ahmad Syawal (left), a 54-year old contractor who claimed him to be a former Umno strong man.
Naidu is DAP's assemblyperson for Pasir Bedemar, one of the two state constituencies in Teluk Intan.
The other, Changkat Jong, was won by BN.
Although Dyana kept nodding while talking to Ahmad, she still said that she lives in Gelang Patah resident as she is still Lim's political secretary.
Lim then came to her rescue by promising to Ahmad that he will let Dyana (below) move to Teluk Intan if she wins.
"I will become her guarantor on this," he quipped.
The contractor, then said that he is not afraid of expressing his support for the Opposition, as "those who steal the cows" have yet to face consequences.
He is belived to be referring to the National Feedlot Centre scandal involving the family of Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
