Man in black held for provoking protesters

Once again, there was tension at the Penang state assembly today, leading to the arrest of a man for attempting to provoke a group of Umno Youth protesters.

The man was dressed in black with the logo of Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), an NGO linked to Pakatan Rakyat.

The unidentified man made his way into the group of protesters gathered opposite the state assembly building.

The Umno Youth members were there to demand an apology from DAP Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer for uttering the words "Umno celaka" in the state assembly on Tuesday.

According to Umno Youth exco member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah (left), who was heading the group of 40 protesters, the man tried to provoke them.

"He tried to provoke us but we cooperated with the police," Armand told reporters, without elaborating.

Policemen at the scene were quick to diffuse the tension by arresting the man just as he was being surrounded by the protesters.

It is learnt that the man has been taken to the Lebuh Pantai police station for questioning.

At 12.30pm, Umno assemblypersons led by state opposition leader Jahara Abdul Hamid met with the protesters for about 15 minutes.

Jahara (right) said she supported the group’s action and would table a special motion to push for Rayer to apologise.

"Umno is not 'samseng' (thugs). We want Rayer to apologise," she added.

Meanwhile, Sungei Aceh assemblyperson Mahmud Zakaria said he supported the group’s action but added that the rules must be followed.

Yesterday, an angry mob consisting of Umno Youth members and others stormed the state assembly building, demanding that Rayer apologises.

The incident led to the police deploying some 50 personnel, including members of the light strike force, to ensure security at the state assembly.
