Utusan: Insulting Umno insults Malays and Islam

Utusan Malaysia in an editorial today declared the act of insulting Umno was tantamount to insulting Malays and Islam.

The Umno-owned newspaper said this in reference to DAP Seri Delima state assemblyperson RSN Rayer who labelled Umno as "celaka" (damned) during the Penang state assembly sitting on Tuesday.

"It can be interpreted that Rayer had insulted Islam and Malays because Umno comprises of many Malays and Muslims," said Awang Selamat, a pseudonym used to express the daily's editorial stance.

Mingguan Malaysia, which is the Sunday edition of Utusan Malaysia, also defended the series of violent protests by Umno Youth.

"it is easy to understand why so many are angry at Rayer because his provocation went overboard.

"Do not blame others if there is a reaction. Extremism begets extremism," it said.

On Wednesday, Umno Youth had stormed the Penang state assembly, demanding for Rayer and this was followed by a protest at the DAP headquarters on Thursday where Umno members tore down a sign and threatened to torch the building.

Violent protests

On Friday, Umno Youth members threw flying kicks and eggs at the DAP office in Kuantan and damaged its signboard with sticks.

Utusan Malaysia said the refusal of the DAP leadership to compel Rayer to apologise was a sign of endorsement.

It also rained insults on the embattled state assemblyperson.

"It is shameful for DAP that it has a leader who cannot differentiate between the state assembly and a toilet that has not been cleaned for a week.

"Awang is concerned, if Rayer does not seek treatment (counseling), faeces may come out of his mouth due to saturation.

"We can't possibly want to see him put a toilet bowl over his head every time there is a state assembly sitting," said the daily.

In a separate report, some 500 members from the Tanah Merah Umno division protested against Rayer's statement.

They handed a memorandum of protest to Umno's Tanah Merah MP Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz to pass on to DAP supremo and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang, according to Utusan Malaysia.

Following the series of violent protests, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had urged Umno members to abide by the law and uphold the party's good name.

He also condemned Rayer for his insult against Umno.

However, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi were defensive of the protest, with the former calling it a "natural reaction" and the latter saying it was a "price DAP had to pay".
