PETALING JAYA: A Young Women’s Parliament is to be held next month to debate women’s issues, with 222 young delegates being given exposure to politics and policymaking.
The delegates, aged between 15 and 30, will also come under the wings of 12 MPs and state assemblywomen, including Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Nurul Izzah Anwar, and Yeo Bee Yin, in a mentoring programme.
The parliament, to be held online on Aug 14-15, is organised by the Malaysia Young Generation group.
The delegates come from a variety of backgrounds, including students, Orang Asli representatives, those with disabilities and activists.
Programme director Shatesh Kumar Sangar said the participants would discuss policies and issues related to women’s affairs, gender equality, social issues and other matters.
“It is time for women to speak out and stop being used to garner votes for political parties,” Shatesh said. “Women should be given a more important role in politics rather than merely being vote-getters.”
The event is being held in response to Malaysia being ranked 117 out of 152 countries in a report by the World Economic Forum on female participation in politics.
Shatesh said the women’s wings of political parties must push their parties to allocate 40% of available seats to women. - FMT
