KUALA LUMPUR: Actress Datin Rebecca Nur Al Islam took to social media to share her harrowing experience trying to seek urgent medical treatment for her Covid-19 positive husband.
With tears rolling down her cheek, Rebecca recounted her experience on Instagram Live where she had difficulties getting her husband admitted to hospitals because they claimed they were full.
She said her husband, Datuk Norazam Sulaiman, contracted Covid-19 last week and had breathing difficulties and required urgent medical treatment.
"I tried calling more than 20 hospitals in the city and Selangor. Not a single one was able to admit him because they claimed the hospitals were full.
"I had to leave behind my children, who are also Covid-19 positive, to find a hospital for my husband who was in critical condition," she said in between sobs.
Rebecca said when she and husband arrived at a private hospital, she was told that there was a waiting list to seek help as there were many patients waiting.
"My husband and I had to wait for almost two hours inside the ambulance. I admit, I had earlier refused to send my husband to any public hospital or (Covid-19 treatment and quarantine centre) Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) because I feared his condition could worsen.
"While waiting, I remembered my friend telling me about a hotel in the city that has been converted into a low-risk quarantine centre and managed by a private clinic. So, I decided to take my husband there instead because he needed oxygen urgently.
"The doctors told me that he was a Covid-19 Category 4 patient," she said.
Rebecca said Norazam was admitted to a private medical centre here at 10.30pm yesterday.
"When we were at the emergency unit, my heart broke into pieces when I saw how helpless my husband was. For the first time, I saw him crying as he told me to not leave him."
"He repeatedly told me that he was scared. He wanted me to accompany him. I was told that I was not allowed to be there with him as he would be warded at the restricted zones for category 4 and 5 patients.
"I left the hospital around 5am. Alhamdulillah, all my children did not have any Covid-19 symptoms, except for my two maids who need to be taken to hospital," she said.
Rebecca is under home quarantine with her children.
On July 8, Rebecca confirmed that her husband and six children as well as their three maids were tested positive for Covid-19. - NST
