Azalina credits Zahid after Putrajaya scuttles emergency laws

Umno supreme council member Azalina Said Othman has applauded party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the party leadership after Putrajaya abruptly announced today that the emergency laws have been revoked.

"I am confident (that this development) was the result of continued appeals by Umno," she said in a statement today.

"I wish to applaud and congratulate the party president and Umno leadership, who has consistently upheld the decree of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and represented the people in objecting against the continuation of emergency beyond Aug 1."

Yesterday, Zahid had warned that Umno cabinet ministers, deputy ministers and those with GLC positions would resign should the emergency ordinances continue to be in effect beyond Aug 1.

Under Article 150(7) of the Federal Constitution, emergency ordinances continue to be in effect for six months after the expiry of the emergency, unless it is annulled through Parliament.

However, de facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan told Parliament this morning that the emergency ordinances were already revoked on July 21.

As of 3pm today, there was no evidence of this on the federal gazette website.

Opposition MPs were up in arms since there were no formal prior announcements. - Mkini
