‘Babi’ producer claims trial to not having permit for movie

Toh Han Boon, producer of the movie ‘Babi’, at the Petaling Jaya magistrates’ court today.

PETALING JAYA: A local producer claimed trial in the magistrates’ court here today to a charge of not having permission to produce the film “Babi”.

Toh Han Boon was slapped with one charge under Section 22(1) of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia or Finas Act.

It was alleged that Toh took part in the movie’s production and put up the film’s poster without authorisation from Finas last year.

If found guilty, the 35-year-old faces a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a maximum two years in jail or both.

Deputy public prosecutor Zamriah Zarifah Aris asked the court to impose a bail of RM8,000 for Toh and for him to surrender his passport to the court pending the disposal of the case.

Toh’s lawyer, Haijan Omar, objected to the bail conditions, citing that they were unreasonable.

He said the case was not an offence under the Penal Code.

Magistrate Muhammad Iskandar Zainol granted Toh a bail of RM5,000 with one surety. The court did not impose any additional condition.

Iskandar set Oct 14 for further mention of the case.

Toh was also represented by Edly Mohammad Firdaus.

Previously, Perikatan Nasional (PN) Youth members had lodged a police report against the director of the film, Namewee, over its poster, alleging that it touched on racial sensitivities.

They said they feared the poster could cause interracial tension.

“Babi”, a movie about bullying in school, has received nominations at four international film festivals. - FMT
