Cops nab 'want to kena whack?' maskless man

Police have arrested and remanded a man who became verbally abusive and threatened violence after he was reprimanded for not wearing a face mask in public, which is an offence.

The incident happened on Sunday (July 18) at a nasi lemak stall along Jalan Desa Bakti in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur.

Brickfields district police chief Anuar Omar confirmed that the man was arrested earlier today.

“Yes, we have made an arrest and will remand him for two days under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code (procedure where investigation cannot be completed within 24 hours),” he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

The man will be remanded at the Brickfields district police station.

A police report was previously lodged after the maskless man launched into a verbal tirade against another customer at the nasi lemak stall.

The nasi lemak vendor and her daughter intervened while the customer was seen backing away from the man.

A bystander recorded a short video of the exchange, which has been widely shared on social media.

Police are investigating the case under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Regulation 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease (Measures Within Infected Local Areas (Movement Control) Regulations 2021 for violating the standard operating procedures (SOP) against Covid-19.

Under the Penal Code, the man faces up to two years imprisonment, or a fine, or both. - Mkini
