The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) has called on the government to enact a moratorium on rent evictions and home seizures for six to nine months.
This is to prevent those who have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic from becoming homeless.
"These people (who have lost their means of income) have no support or social welfare guarantees. The government needs to take more serious and proactive steps to help those who have lost their homes and accommodation.
"Policies and laws can be formed to ensure that this assistance is implemented," said Muda pro-tem vice president Lim Wei Jiet and policy director Teo Lee Ken.
Earlier today, The Malaysian Insight published a photo essay documenting how city dwellers had become homeless after losing their jobs or sources of income.
Lim and Teo said countries such as the UK had already put in place policies to prevent evictions during the pandemic.
However, the duo said such measures were only for the short term, and that they must be paired with sped up vaccination efforts and welfare aid. - Mkini
