PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal will deliver on Friday its verdict on an appeal by former Federal Territories minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor against his conviction and sentence for accepting a bribe of RM2 million from a businessman.
This was revealed today after the Federal Court’s communications unit called on media representatives to register for the case as they would only be allowed to follow the case virtually.
On April 22, a three-member panel chaired by Suraya Othman reserved judgement after hearing submissions from the prosecution and defence. The other two judges were Abu Bakar Jais and Ahmad Nasfy Yasin.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court had, on Dec 21 last year, sentenced Tengku Adnan, better known as Ku Nan, to 12 months in jail and imposed a RM2 million fine on him after finding him guilty.
However, the court allowed the Putrajaya MP’s application for a stay of execution of the jail sentence and fine pending his appeal.
Tengku Adnan was charged in his capacity as a public servant with having received a total of RM2 million from businessman Chai Kin Kong who is Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd (AKSB) director.
The Putrajaya MP is said to have received the money via a Hong Leong Islamic Bank cheque belonging to the company which was deposited into a CIMB account owned by Tadmansori Holdings Sdn Bhd (THSB), which Tengku Adnan has an interest in, and is known to AKSB as being related to his official duties.
He was accused of committing the offence at CIMB Bank Berhad’s Pusat Bandar Damansara branch on June 14, 2016, under Section 165 of the Penal Code which provides an imprisonment of up to two years or a fine or both.
Counsel Tan Hock Chuan represented Tengku Adnan while deputy public prosecutor Asmah Musa appeared for the prosecution. - FMT
