#Lawan street protest planned for July 31

 

Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) is calling on the public to join a street protest on July 31.

This is a continuation of their #Lawan (fight) protests, which was previously held online with people sharing photos of black flags.

SSR made the call for protest in a statement today but said the time and location will only be disclosed later.

"SSR calls on all Malaysians to go out and #Lawan on July 31, to symbolise the fight against a government which is not qualified to lead the country.

"We do not wish to be enemies with anyone except leaders who are power-hungry and oblivious to the struggles faced by the people," they said.

SSR also reiterated three demands, namely for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to resign, for a full Parliament session to be held that was not just a "government ceramah" (lecture), and for automatic moratoriums to be extended to everyone.

Parliament will convene on July 26 for five days. However, the itinerary given indicated that the bulk of the session would be spent on briefings on the Covid-19 situation from the government.

Meanwhile, loan moratoriums are available to all, but upon request. Critics have also hit out at the fact that interest will still accrue during the moratorium period.

The call for protest comes four days after the group staged a flash mob at Dataran Merdeka on Saturday which featured black flags and the effigies of dead bodies.

Police have fined three organisers RM2,000 each for breaching pandemic regulations that prohibited demonstrations.

SSR ended their statement by citing a line from Dialog, a poem by the late Kassim Ahmad, which reads: "Kian lama kita mati dalam setia, kali ini kita hidup dalam derhaka!" (For so long we have died in obedience, now we live in treason). - Mkini
