A journalist from Malaysiakini was questioned today as part of an investigation into claims that six media personnel trespassed on the grounds of the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (Maeps) Covid-19 quarantine centre on the day of the planned Hartal Doktor Kontrak (HDK) strike.
KiniTV broadcast journalist Daniel Anthony, who was among the media personnel present at Maeps on that day, was questioned for over one hour at the Sepang police station this afternoon.
He also had his handphone confiscated by the cops after giving his statement.
Daniel was represented by lawyer Joshua Moghana Sundaram.
Yesterday, Sepang deputy OCPD Md Noor Aehawan Mohamed said investigations were being carried out under Section 448 of the Penal Code for trespassing and Rule 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infection Local Areas) Regulations 2021.
He also confirmed that the police have recorded the statements of at least 17 Health Ministry personnel including doctors and nurses, over the matter.
Aehawan said the investigations followed a police report lodged by the Maeps quarantine centre management team on July 27.
The area of the alleged trespass is a hall that housed 496 Covid-19 positive female patients.
"The hall has been gazetted as a quarantine and treatment centre, and outsiders cannot enter without permission," Aehawan had said in a statement yesterday.
Unlike staff in other major hospitals, those planning to strike at Maeps chose not to participate in the walkout following threats of arrest prior to the planned demonstration, which was to have taken place at 11am on July 26.
The staff merely took photographs within the grounds.
Following an uproar over the questioning of the personnel, police clarified that no healthcare workers were under investigation in the current probe. - Mkini
