Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham said none of the 3,106 fully vaccinated medical officers who got infected with Covid-19 deteriorated to Category 5, which requires ventilation support.
He said most of the cases were asymptomatic (32.6 percent) or had mild symptoms only (67.2 percent).
Only 0.09 percent deteriorated to Category 3 (more serious symptoms), with another 0.09 percent becoming Category 4 (requires oxygen support) patients.
“This shows that with vaccination, we can reduce the severity of (the illness) or (the number of) Category 3, 4 and 5 patients. (We can reduce) hospitalisations and usage of the Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
“So, with that, if we ramp up vaccination, it means that even if we get infected, we can just isolate at home, there is no need to go to the hospital which will cause overcrowding in the hospitals.
“Then we can treat this like the common flu, where if we get it, we just stay at home. That is how we can learn to live with this virus in the future,” Noor Hisham said in a press conference held in Putrajaya and live-streamed online today.
The 3,106 fully vaccinated medical officers who contracted Covid-19 is only 1.26 percent of the total number of medical officers who have been fully vaccinated, he added.
Fully vaccinated refers to someone who has received the necessary number of their vaccine doses and it has been 14 days since they received the last vaccine shot. - Mkini
