PETALING JAYA: Non-Muslims may write to the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) to clear any confusion, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said any dispute should be resolved in a harmonious manner.
He was referring to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s reminder to non-Muslims yesterday to respect and refrain from interfering in matters relating to Islamic affairs.
The Selangor ruler was responding to a proposal by Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham to include non-Muslim constitutional experts in a committee studying the conflicts between shariah laws and the Federal Constitution.
In a brief statement this morning, Anwar said he fully supports Sultan Sharafuddin’s statement.
Yesterday, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook clarified that Ngeh had misunderstood the authority behind the establishment of the committee, which is the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs, chaired by Sultan Sharafuddin.
He said DAP was not trying to interfere in Islamic affairs, and that it respected the wisdom of the sultan as MKI chairman in making decisions. - FMT
