SEREMBAN: Food caterers have been urged to be wary of "clients" calling over the phone to place orders as three caterers have fallen victim to scams.
Seremban OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta Che Din said the three caterers lost some RM91,000 after being duped by individuals claiming to be from government agencies and departments last month.
"The scammers will call the caterer over the phone and place a huge order for food and souvenirs.
"The caterers would then be asked to bank in a certain amount for souvenirs and other items which will be reimbursed later," he said in a statement.
ACP Hatta said the three caterers did as told but when they called the government department later for updates, they were told there were no such orders placed.
The cases, he said the cases were being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
He also advised caterers to always check with the relevant government department or agency before carrying out any cash transaction.
The public can also call the CCID Scam Response Centre at 03-26101559 or 03-26101599 to verify any information. - Star
