MAHKOTA BY-ELECTION | The Mahkota by-election has kicked off with two candidates, one representing the federal coalition government and the other from the opposition Perikatan Nasional.
Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and PN’s Mohd Haizan Jaafar were nominated today at Dewan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail in Kluang, Johor.
PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin and coalition by-election director Azmin Ali accompanied Haizan (above, right).
The Election Commission set Sept 24 and 28 for early voting and polling day, respectively.
The Mahkota by-election was called following the death of incumbent assemblyperson Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.
Speaking to reporters after the nomination, Hussien said that his father’s death a few days ago will not affect his performance.
“This (his death) will be an injection of strength and his last message is one of the strengths that I would provide,” he told reporters. However, he declined to share his father’s last words.
Haizan, known locally as Coach Haizan, said he would develop the sports scene in Kluang if he was elected.
The 58-year-old was a semi-pro football player and represented Johor at the state level. - Mkini
