Famous popiah shop in Melaka ordered to close due to rat droppings

PETALING JAYA: 

A well-known popiah shop on Jalan Munshi Abdullah in Melaka is among three eateries ordered to close for 14 days after being found with rat droppings and for other offences.

Melaka health, human resources and unity committee chairman Ngwe Hee Sem said the three premises were ordered to shut immediately yesterday, Bernama reported.

This action was taken under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 during 

Operasi Sarap

, carried out by the state health department in the Melaka Tengah district.

Ngwe said the popiah shop was issued five notices with total compound fines of RM1,600 for violating the 2009 Food Hygiene Regulations.

The shop had violated Regulation 33 on the personal hygiene of food handlers and Section 11 on general duties of the owner or occupier of food premises.

Ngwe said the compound fine notices were also issued for the presence of rat droppings, placement of raw materials next to uncovered trash bins and the packaging area for popiah being cluttered with items that could contaminate the food.

Not all workers were wearing personal protective equipment during food preparation and some workers were wearing jewellery while handling food.

Ngwe said this after the Integrated Enforcement Operation on the Control of Tobacco Products for Public Health 2024 (Act 852) around Bukit Baru.

A total of 1,638 premises across the state were inspected under the enforcement of the Act during the 11 days of the operation that began on Oct 1.

Six compound notices were issued for smoking in non-smoking areas. Action was also taken against a minor caught smoking. - FMT
