PETALING JAYA: A majority of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students who enrolled in the dual language programme (DLP) passed three core subjects they sat for between 2021 and 2023, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Education minister Fadhlina Sidek said 97.9% of DLP students passed the Bahasa Melayu paper last year.
In 2022, about 97.8% passed the paper, while the year before the percentage stood at 97.1%.
Fadhlina said about 97% of DLP-students passed the English examination in 2023 and 2022, while some 96.8% passed the paper in 2021.
Last year, some 92.3% of DLP students passed their science paper. In 2022 and 2021, the percentage of passes was 92.3% and 91.6%, respectively.
The percentage of passes for DLP students who sat for the maths paper last year was about 92.3%, she said.
In 2022, the percentage was about 90.5%. The year before it was 91.4%.
“The effectiveness of the DLP is based on the performance of these students in the SPM examinations, especially for these subjects,” Fadhlina said in a written reply.
She was responding to Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa) who wanted to know the effectiveness of the programme.
The programme, which has its fair share of proponents and detractors, was implemented in 2016 and allowed for the teaching of maths and science in English.
The initiative follows the controversial cessation of English-medium instruction, which began with a policy in 2003 under then-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The policy was reversed in 2012 by the then government. - FMT
