SHOULD drivers be condemned when they hit-and-run? Ethically, help should be offered to the victim on the spot but sometimes, the situation isn’t always so simple.
In a viral video post on X by netizen ziqman, a child could be seen run over by a truck in a village setting.
The tragedy did not end there of course, for the villagers quickly surrounded and attacked the vehicle. They could even be seen opening the door, allegedly to hit the driver.
The shocking scene has since drawn condemnation from netizens who heaped the blame on the parents of the children. Some even advised legal action against them.
Netizen rara said it was fortunate that evidence is recorded by the dashcam.
“My sympathies to the innocent person that got beaten, when it is the child who was wrong for simply running on the road. And the mother and father are foolish for not looking after their children,” said rara.
Netizen Aku Melayu added that during his childhood, people advised that there are certain areas in the village where drivers should immediately go to the police station to make a report instead of stopping to help.
“These villagers will beat you up good. And we thought such people no longer exist now. Hopefully the victim takes action against everyone who beats her up,” said Aku Melayu.
“Need to make a free condom programme near here,” said Odin Allfather.
Apparently, the driver Zalina Chaw has come forward to make a statement on Facebook, stating that the child was fine with the exception of several scratches at the back of the calf.
She added that the tragedy occurred because she was hampered by her blindspot.
Zalina further said that the villagers did not attack her, and that many of them had helped instead. The truck has since been sent to the workshop for repairs.
It appears there is a huge gap in the reality of the situation compared to what’s seen in the video. The villagers were not hillbillies after all, or at least as claimed by Zalina.
We can only be thankful that no one was seriously injured.— Focus Malaysia
