The queue began at 4.30pm, with approximately 200 people lining up at a time outside the venue.
The wake was a tightly controlled affair, with the media barred from entering or taking photographs of the premises.
Among the notables spotted entering the premises was People’s Progressive Party president J Loga Bala Mohan.
It was previously reported that members of the family had requested that the wake be a quiet event, with no wreaths, flowers or garlands to be sent.
Among those who waited in line to pay their last respects was businessman Praveen Maniam, 41.
“As an Indian layman, (he inspired me as) the first Indian billionaire in this country.
“We can’t deny he was one of the biggest contributors to the growth of this country. (I’m paying my) last respects to him as an Indian and Malaysian,” Praveen told FMT.
Another member of the public, ex-Astro employee Vignesh Nambiar, 43, said Ananda was a visionary leader, and lauded his work in the nation’s telecommunications and satellite industries.
“He put Malaysia on the global map. He inspired me when I was young with his foresight in technology, bringing the world to Malaysia.
“He could have done this elsewhere, but still did this (for Malaysia),” he said.
Former Brickfields resident Amar G Krish Kumar Abdullah, 60, said he came for the wake from Batu Caves to pay his last respects to a respected Brickfields figure.
“He was very generous and did a lot in terms of charity and education. I didn’t benefit personally from his work, but saw others who did,” he said.
Both Amar and Vignesh said they appreciated the fact that Ananda’s wake was conducted in Brickfields, where he was born.
“He grew up here and was a student of the Vivekananda Tamil School further down the road in Brickfields,” said Amar. - FMT
