Youth and sports minister Dr Taufiq Johari says this is in line with government efforts to implement cost savings and prudent financial management.

PETALING JAYA:
The youth and sports ministry will not provide direct financial allocations to Selangor as host of the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma), but will instead provide facilities, says its minister, Dr Taufiq Johari.

Taufiq said this was also agreed upon at a previous Cabinet meeting with the 22nd Sukma and 2026 Selangor Para Sukma implementing committee entrusted with running the events.

He said this was in line with government efforts to implement cost savings and prudent financial management.

“The Cabinet decided that the federal government would not provide any aid or funds, so the costs have to be borne by the state involved. This was agreed upon previously.

“We will still provide assistance in other aspects. For instance, Selangor can use federal-owned facilities. Several of these will be provided for free, including certain locations and amenities,” Bernama reported him as saying in Kuala Lumpur today.

Taufiq said the federal government will also help with the cost of anti-doping tests set by the Anti-Doping Agency of Malaysia, as discussed with the 2026 Sukma supreme special committee.

Earlier today, The Star reported Selangor youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Najwan Halimi as saying the state received a letter from the youth and sports ministry that no allocation would be provided to Selangor for this year’s Sukma.

He said the event dates remain unchanged, with Sukma to be held from Aug 15 to 24 and Para Sukma from Sept 5 to 10.

Najwan also said Selangor would not hold the opening and closing ceremonies at Sepang International Circuit, in line with the Selangor sultan’s order for cost-cutting measures.

The ceremonies would be held on a “smaller, more modest scale, without elements like fireworks and the like”, he said.

He said the target number of volunteers had been reduced from nearly 30,000 to between 3,000 and 5,000 to cut allowances. - FMT
