Vijay becomes Tamil Nadu's new chief minister

Film star-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as Tamil Nadu state's new chief minister today after he was promised support by other parties to achieve the required legislative majority.

His Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party supporters celebrated by bursting crackers and distributing sweets in various cities as the 51-year-old was administered the oath of office by the state governor at Chennai's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

His father SA Chandrasekhar, mother Shobha, Tamil actress Trisha Krishnan and Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi were present.

Nine cabinet ministers also took oath on the occasion.

Vijay promised a transparent government and better law and order in the state of 77 million. The TVK won 108 seats in April's assembly election, falling short of the 118 needed for a majority of its own in the 234-member chamber.

The Congress, a key ally of the former ruling party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), extended support to Vijay along with Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) to end the uncertainty over the new government.

State governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Saturday appointed Vijay as chief minister and asked him to seek a vote of confidence on or before May 13.

DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai earlier said former chief minister MK Stalin did not want a constitutional crisis in the state and persuaded his allies to extend support to Vijay in government formation, according to local media reports.

The Congress has five seats and the other four parties have two members each in the newly elected assembly.
