JOHOR BARU: The Education Ministry will consider a proposal to station security personnel at all schools to bolster safety following two fatal car crashes at schools over the past month.
Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the School Safety Management Guidelines were being finalised to improve existing protocols.
The guidelines are being looked at by the Education Institution Safety Reform Committee, which comprises experts from various backgrounds.
Asked about the need for People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) members to be deployed at schools as a safety measure, Fadhlina said the ministry would study the proposal first.
She said the ministry would ensure the guidelines remained relevant to current challenges in protecting students and staff.
She said the initiative was being driven by the committee involving representatives from police and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
The committee also includes representatives from non-governmental organisations and the community to ensure school safety issues are prioritised.
"We have also instructed teachers and principals to strictly implement safety measures; there is no compromise on safety issues," she said.
On April 12, a Form One student was killed when hit by a car in front of a surau at SMK Tanjong Mas in Kota Baru.
More recently, on May 5, a Year Two girl died when she was hit by a van at the main gate of SK Seri Maimon in Parit Sulong, Batu Pahat.
Earlier, Fadhlina attended the national-level launch of the 2026 MyLesen B2 Sekolah (MyB2S) programme, officiated by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. - NST
