CAN ONE COMPLETELY LIVE ON VEGETABLES AND FRUITS?

 


It is possible to live a fairly healthy life with diet consisting of only fruits and vegetables. Often, doubts are expressed on protein deficient fruits ably fulfilling body needs. It is to be added here that body is equipped for convertibility of one energy factor to others through metabolism.

Nutrients taken in any form (protein, fat, carbohydrates) are first converted to simple sugar molecules in the process of digestion. This sugar is then absorbed in blood, carried to needy tissues for providing required energy. Thus, it is apparent that our body is able to regulate nutrition needs irrespective of any imbalance in supply.

The process is easy to understand by an example. Many powerful animals in nature like bull, rhino, elephant, horse ect eat only grass. How they fulfill their need for protein, fat and other nutrients?

In modern life style, we however try to feed our body the best package of nutrition. No doubt it helps maintaining good growth of body but on the cost of its reduced metabolic efficiency.
