State exco to meet 400 Panasonic workers hit by impending closure

The Selangor state government will meet 400 workers expected to be retrenched by the closure of television production operations at Panasonic AVC Networks Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Sdn Bhd next week to discuss assistance and alternative jobs.

Menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the meeting would be conducted by state human resources, poverty alleviation, indigenous & minority affairs committee chairman V Papparaidu and representatives from the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) to obtain more information from the affected workers, Bernama reported.

“Early intervention measures, such as providing food baskets, will certainly be carried out.

“We will also assist them in finding alternative employment so they can sustain the lives they have built in this state over the years,” he said after officiating the Selangor Mega Jobcare 2026 programme in Shah Alam today.

Panasonic Malaysia Sdn Bhd has announced that production operations for two products would be closed, impacting 400 workers by the end of March next year.

Papparaidu said Perkeso may provide financial protection and assistance to workers who lose their jobs.

“Perkeso will provide a form of insurance where, if they are retrenched and remain unemployed, they will receive payments in stages. It acts as a job-seeking allowance, starting at 80% of their salary in the first month, 50% in the second month, and subsequently 30%.

“This Perkeso initiative will greatly assist Selangor residents who face retrenchment. We’ll do our best to resolve their issues.”

Selangor Mega Jobcare 2026 brings together 147 employers offering more than 11,000 vacancies, with 62.2% offering monthly salaries exceeding RM3,000.

The career fair, organised in collaboration with MYFutureJobs for participants aged between 18 and 60, is being held at the Shah Alam Convention Centre from 9am to 5pm. It concludes tomorrow. - FMT
