Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail has expressed disappointment with Nurul Izzah Anwar's decision to resign as PKR deputy president.
"If that is her choice to resign, that is her right.
"But as a party member, I feel aggrieved because the position is no child’s play - that's the second-highest post in PKR," she told Malaysiakini when met at a programme at the Ampang parliamentary service centre today.
Rodziah (above, left), however, said she was not surprised by the decision as she had heard about the intention several times since the former Permatang Pauh MP won the post.
While she understands the reasons Nurul Izzah gave for her desire to relinquish the post, including to further her studies, Rodziah believed they should not prevent the PKR leader known as the “reformasi princess” from championing reforms.
"There are others who are still studying but continue the reform struggle.
"So, that is up to the individual," Rodziah said.
Don’t return to active politics
The former Selangor exco member added that if it is true Nurul Izzah intends to take a break to further her studies, it would be better for her not to return to active politics.
"Give others the opportunity to lead PKR," Rodziah said.
She also highlighted that this was merely her personal view and not the party's official stance.
The PKR lawmaker further expressed her belief that Nurul Izzah's resignation is a sign that the party needs to re-evaluate its direction and struggle.
"I hope the top leadership does not treat the position (of deputy president) lightly.
"The position is important because it symbolises the strength of a political party.
"If we accept a position but do not carry out the entrusted responsibilities, then the matter deserves to be given attention," she added.
Serving beyond any office
Yesterday, Nurul Izzah confirmed her intention to step down from the party’s number two post, stressing that she would continue to serve the public beyond any office or title.
Before that, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil announced that she had been granted temporary leave beginning after the PKR National Congress on Aug 14 and 15.
PKR vice-president Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will assume the deputy president’s responsibilities during Nurul Izzah’s absence.
Nurul Izzah was elected PKR deputy president in May last year after defeating then-incumbent Rafizi Ramli. - Mkini
