Penang police chief Datuk Dennis Lim said the Form Four student claimed she received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number at 1.59pm on Aug 4, asking her to send a personal video.
He said about seven minutes later, the sender allegedly used the "view once" function to send an image of the girl accompanied by insulting remarks.
The teenager also suspected the perpetrator was linked to her school.
"Following the report, the Seberang Prai Tengah district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Department opened an investigation under Section 8 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 507E of the Penal Code," he said today.
Section 8 covers offences involving the exchange, publication or distribution of child sexual abuse material, while Section 507E relates to publishing or distributing a person's identity information with intent to cause harassment, distress, fear or anxiety.
Yesterday, a mother urged authorities to expedite investigations into those allegedly behind repeated sexual cyberbullying targeting her daughter.
The 46-year-old woman, who wished to be known only as Nur, said her second child, an SPM candidate, had suffered emotional distress after her face, name, class and phone number were allegedly circulated via obscene posters and fake social media accounts since April.
Lim said investigations were ongoing to identify and trace the perpetrator.
"The public is advised not to speculate or spread unverified information that could affect the police investigation," he added.

Lim said the complainant had previously lodged two police reports, which were classified as "refer to other agency" and forwarded to the district education office. - NST
