MIRI – The Barisan Nasional coalition never agreed to commit to make Malaysia an Islamic state, said Sarawak Barisan component parties.
Top leaders of the Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) have said that there is no way that Barisan will do away with the present secular status of Malaysia.
SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting said there is no way that all Barisan component parties would agree to any move to turn Malaysia into an Islamic state.
“Barisan component parties have never and will never agree to change the country’s secular status to make Malaysia an Islamic country,” said Ting.
“And since Sarawak and Sabah are equal partners in Malaysia, and we in Sarawak and Sabah want to remain secular, there can be no Islamic status for Malaysia,” added Ting.
Meanwhile, PDP president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said that the Barisan coalition has not made any commitment to amend the Federal Constitution to make Malaysia an Islamic country.
“Our Barisan colleagues have not agreed in any way that Malaysia is Islamic country. While Islam is the official religion in peninsula Malaysia it does not mean Malaysia is an Islamic country,” he said.
