A former Estonian prime minister and his delegation have been accused of sexual assault at a party in Kuala Lumpur, sparking controversy in his home country.
The incident has also sparked calls for the former prime minister, Taavi Roivas, to resign from his current post as vice president of the Estonian parliament.
Estonian portal err.ee, citing Estonian language daily Eesti Päevaleht, reported that multiple cases of assault, ranging from verbal to physical, allegedly took place at a bar in a Kuala Lumpur hotel where Roivas' delegation visited.
Roivas' delegation had attended the party after ending an official trade visit related to the technology sector on Sept 21.
A woman said she was “aggressively” kissed by the perpetrator before he pulled up her dress and groped her, according to the report.
A “delegation member” was also described to have poured a drink over a woman at the party, saying “I wanted to make you wet”.
Another woman was also pushed into a swimming pool at the bar.
Malaysiakini has reached out to the police which said they are checking whether any police reports have been lodged.
The report did not specify if Roivas was personally involved in the sexual harassment or only his members of his delegation.
Roivas, in a statement, apologised “personally as well as in the name of all of the delegation” to all those who were affected by the incident, according to the report.
The report added the Roivas had met with the complainant to persuade her against "naming any names".
Estonian Parliament president Eiki Nestor called the incident "condemnable", adding that Roivas must decide whether he should resign, according to a separate report by the portal.- Mkini
