PETALING JAYA: A flying metal shard from a lawn mower blade fatally hit the chest of a five-year-old girl in Kubang Rotan in Alor Setar yesterday.
The child’s father, who wished to be identified only as Murad, was sharpening the blade at his house when it broke into pieces and hit Nur Aliya Syifa Murad, who was standing about five metres away in the 5.30pm incident.
Murad said he did not notice his daughter standing nearby as she was playing inside the house when he started to sharpen the blade outside the house.
“Everything happened too fast and the shard first hit the car before it rebounded and pierced into my daughter’s chest,” the New Straits Times quoted Murad as saying at his mother-in-law’s house in Kampung Tanjung Besar in Alor Setar.
Murad said he rushed the girl to the 1Malaysia Clinic before she was transferred to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.
However, the youngest of three siblings was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Kota Star police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rozi Jidin confirmed the incident.
He said the case was classified as sudden death. -FMT
