Did you know that almost overnite there is serious diplomatic tension between the US and Turkey (since Sunday)?
The Americans have refused to issue visas for Turks from their embassy in Ankara.
Likewise the Turks have stopped processing visas for Americans at their embassy in Washington. This is serious.

To make a long story short, the Turks are still smarting after that attempted coup de etat last year.
Erdogan says that Fethullah Gulen (his arch rival who lives in Pennsylvania) was behind the coup attempt.

The straw that broke the camel's back was the most recent Turkish police arrest of a Turkish citizen working in the US Embassy in Ankara on charges that he was a spy who helped give information to the coup plotters. (From inside the US Embassy in Ankara??)
"Turkish officials arrested Metin Topuz, a Turkish citizen and employee at the U.S. consulate in Istanbul. He is accused of espionage and—even worse to Ankara—of links to Fethullah Gulen"

The American Embassy and the US govt reacted strongly that Turkey has no right to arrest one of their employees under spying charges.
- Donald Trump immediately cancelled the visa services in Ankara.
- The Turks retaliated likewise at their embassy in Washington.
Here is the news:
Turkey on Sunday suspended non-immigrant visa services at all Turkish diplomatic facilities in the United States, in a tit-for-tat move amid escalating tensions between the NATO allies.
Just hours after the US mission to Turkey announced it was restricting visa services, saying that recent events had forced it to "reassess" Ankara's commitment to the security of US facilities and staff, the Turkish embassy in Washington, DC, hit back with an almost identical statement.
"In order to minimise the number of visitors to our Embassy and Consulates while this assessment proceeds, effective immediately we have suspended all non-immigrant visa services at all Turkish diplomatic facilities in US," read its statement on Twitter, echoing the earlier US announcement.
The matter has actually been boiling for some time.
The Turks have been arresting and jailing quite a few Americans in Turkey who they accuse of being spies involved in the coup de etat plot to topple Erdogan.
Here is the New York Times:

Here is the New York Times:
- One is a NASA scientist vacationing in Turkey.
- Another a Christian missionary who lived in Turkey for 23 years.
- Others include chemistry professor from Pennsylvania
- and his brother, a real estate agent.
among a dozen Americans jailed, face long prison sentences
for allegedly playing part in failed coup last year.
deteriorating relations with US and Europe
Turkey also arresting foreign nationals.
including Americans accused of ties to Fethullah Gulen
Turkey says orchestrated conspiracy from Pennsylvania.
Americans have pressed Turkish govt on certain cases
including personal appeals by Trump and Mike Pence to Erdogan
and letter signed by 78 members of Congress.
But Americans powerless to secure their release
detainees are bargaining chips to extradite Gulen.
Erdogan said would hand over pastor, Andrew Brunson if US gave him Gulen.
“They say, ‘Give us this certain pastor,’” he said
“You have another pastor in your hands; give him to us” Erdogan railed.
Turks insist detainees charged with terrorism and overthrow of state
And then there are a few more things that have become sore points between Turkey and the US and also with NATO (Europe):
1. Turkey wants to arrest one more US Embassy employee
• On October 9 (Monday), Turkey issued another arrest warrant for a second U.S consulate worker; after the first arrest had already ignited the latest tensions. Meantime the employee's wife and child were being held by the Turks.
2. The US has arrested 15 of Erdogan's security staff in Washington for beating up protesters during Erdogan's visit.
- In May, Turkish security officials were videoed beating protestors opposed to Erdogan on a street in downtown Washington D.C.
- 15 of the officials were arrested and charged with felonies, a move strongly denounced by Erdogan
3. Turkey (a NATO member) buys Russian S400 anti aircraft missiles
- In Sept, Erdogan revealed Turkey paying Russia for S-400 anti-aircraft missiles.
- NATO members usually ensure their weapons systems are interoperable
- S-400 is clearly not and its purchase remarkable affront to NATO
- both in terms of practicalities and NATO’s mission statement.
Russian S400 anti aircraft missile system, designed to take out NATO aircraft as well.
4. The US supplies weapons and support for the Kurdish people
- Washington’s partnership with Kurds fighting ISIS adding to tensions.
- Anything having to do with Kurds threatens Turkey.
- Turkey focused on ensuring Kurds don’t establish foothold in southern border.
- Turkey fought decades-long insurgency with Kurdish PKK
- objects to any U.S. partnership with Kurdish parties.
- However U.S. finds Kurds most effective in fighting ISIS
- that is increasingly drawing Turkey’s fury.
My comments : Another one biting the dust. The US are indeed the Great Satan, but the sooner the world is rid of Caliph Erdogan, the better for everyone.
Note that the attempted coup de etat against Erdogan last year took place under the Obama administration. I think after the American disasters in Syria and Libya the failed coup against Erdogan was just one more Obama foreign policy bungle.
There is no smoke without fire. These arrests of so many Americans and US Embassy staff in Ankara for involvement in espionage cannot all be conjured up. It certainly smacks of US involvement.
A new can of worms is being opened up.
