Video streaming services such as Netflix and iflix will be subjected to the goods and services tax (GST), said Customs Department director-general Subromaniam Tholasy.
"Yes, that is for certain," he said, in response to questions from reporters at Shah Alam today.
Last month, Subromaniam said Putrajaya will amend the Goods and Services Tax Act 2014 to subject foreign tech companies that are doing business online with Malaysian customers.
Presently, Malaysians do not pay GST to the Malaysian government for international online shopping services such as Amazon, Alibaba, the Google Play Store or video gaming services such as Steam.
In recent years, many countries are moving towards subjecting such companies to sales or consumption taxes.
However, Putrajaya has yet to provide exact details of its plans, at a time when Malaysia is pushing for a Digital Free Trade Zone in KLIA to push e-commerce.
