TOO LITTLE TOO LATE: CONDEMNED FOR ‘HARASSING’ KASSIM AHMAD TO DEATH, JAWI SAYS ‘NO LONGER HAS INTEREST’ IN CASE, CLAIMS IT ACTED WITHIN LAW

PETALING JAYA: Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) said it no longer has an interest in its case against Muslim intellectual Kassim Ahmad who recently passed away.
While expressing his condolences to his family, Jawi director Abdul Aziz Jusoh said the department adhered to Syariah court’s decision to acquit and discharge him for allegedly insulting Islam and defying the religious authorities.
Abdul Aziz’s statement came in response to Kassim’s lawyer who was reportedly told by his family to seek compensation from Jawi via court proceedings.
Abdul Aziz said the department had acted according to standard operating procedure when Kassim was charged in the Putrajaya Syariah Court on March 2014 under Section 9 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997.
“Therefore, in response to those who want to take action against Jawi, please be informed that we no longer have an interest in this case and have always adhered to the rule of law in carrying out our duty,” he said.
Kassim, 84, passed away last Tuesday in Kulim Hospital, Kedah after having fallen into a coma.
His family reportedly instructed his lawyer to seek compensation from Jawi as they believe its refusal to drop the charges against Kassim had worsened his health.
