Malaysia talking to China about possible Port Klang expansion

Discussions are ongoing between Malaysia and China over the possibility of port expansion plans, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke today.

He said the government had identified Port Klang as its focus for expansion, given its status as the country's primary port.
"This is still in discussion. Our focus is on Port Klang. It is our country's main port and there is a need to increase its capacity as it has a large potential," said Loke.
Port Klang is located strategically in the middle of the Straits of Melaka and is currently ranked the world’s 12th best container port.
"We are working to develop Port Klang as the premier port, not only in Malaysia but also in the South East Asian region.”
"That is why we welcome any parties that wants to work together with us to expand our ports," he told a press conference in Putrajaya after launching a Road Safety Module for primary school children.

He said last October that the government was looking at introducing a single agency to handle the cargo management system of the entire port, thus improving its efficiency.
During his courtesy visit to China's Transport Minister Li Xiaopeng in Beijing last month, Loke said he had the chance to personally meet several key port industry players.
He invited them to consider participating and investing in various upcoming port expansion projects, particularly in Port Klang. - Mkini

    1. Tu la masalah negara kita ni ha... Pape pon pandang kuasa luar dlu. Tak dpt nk sedar potensi negara sndiri. Sbnrnya kita boleh je buat sndiri. Sesetengah benda maybe boleh join venture utk benda2 yg kita belum mahir, contoh mcm dlu Proton dgn Mitsubishi. Tp aku rasa kalau bab bg kuasa luar pegang pelabuhan negara, maybe bnyk rugi dr untung

    2. masalahnya bila negara berhutang jadi la projek2 macam ni kononnya nak langsai hutang. patut kalau takde duit buat la gaya takde duit. macam tak bermanfaat je besarkan port klang tu.

    3. Tak perlu nak discuss pun dah terang2 kerajaan kata malaysia di ambang kehutangan. Nak belanja untuk port klang apa lagi?

  2. Government say no money then why wasting money on expanding Port Klang. They claimed that working to develop Port Klang as the premier port not only in Malaysia, but also in the South East Asian region but for what purpose?

    1. Previously government said that our country got so many debt to be paid for. Now got money to exand port klang and i believe this project will need more than million to be run short or long term wise

    2. This is unnecessary. Should contribute to other thing such as our facilities and infrastructure in remote areas beside education that bring benefit for the citizens.

    3. @Aiden Fatah which will result in more debt right? I mean come on, for long term investments Malaysia should tap in other fields like tourism and manufacturing. Fields we are already good in.

    4. true. such a waste especially when port klang has been there for ages still no problem with it. theres no need to expand.

  3. Malaysia always give project to China instead of other countries. Why not take other initiative to do project with other country and i dont think this is the right time for Malaysia itself to expand something when debt havent fully paid.

    1. Imo, it doesn't matter as much to whom we give the projects. I mean we already gave a few "green light" to the middle east and also Indonesia (the TRX building) but in Malaysia nothing is ever certain and these matters are subject to change. The problem is, the higher ups fail to see such circumstances when pulling these kinds of stunts. The question is why?

    2. I know right? Plus how they going to know expanding port klang will give good return of investment?

    3. thats the issue. they did not provide any financial statement for the project. all we know gov said no money so i doubt they have no budget for investment also.

    4. the problem is malaysia always spend money on projects when the gov know that our country have no money

  4. They must review back whether the project can generate more profit to our economy and or just bring benefit for China. Otherwise, the project will bring nothing but wasting money.

    1. Since Port Klang located in the busy Straits of Malacca which has trade connections with over 120 countries worldwide and dealings with more than 500 ports throughout the globe, they cant just claimed that info to expand the Port Klang with China. They need to think many times not just twice since this is not small project and it is very premature to talk about the awarding of the project now.

    2. They also keeps saying that Port Klang still has the capacity to absorb extra cargo for the next five years. In fact, the 30-million TEU figure is supposed to be Port Klang’s total target for the next 10 years. Guys, now they can be future forecasters when it comes to this project

    3. This year has been a turbulent and challenging time for port operators in Klang as hit by lower volume as shipping lines diverted port calls to Singapore. They should not take this losses as small issue since this losses will be bigger as the expansion project comes along.

  5. They should get the citizen to vote on this Malaysia-China project on Port Klang Expansion whether this project should be start or not bcoz i dont see any purpose or benefit gain from it.

  6. People should be able to have a place in government's decision. Like this Malaysia-China Port Klang expansion. We have to weigh out all the probability of the outcome. Because in the end, the ones who are most affected is the people

    1. Exactly ! as the investment will probably cost about RM10 bil and underpin Westports business activities over the next two decades. And the expansion be completed by 2040, which is very big and long term project.

  7. why is it need to increase capacity? by increasing the capacity can malaysia government get back the investment?

    1. The real question is why spending money increasing capacity of port klang when theres gov no money?

    2. True tho. Minister keeps telling people that government dont have money until and people also donated money to our country for the sake of paying the debt. But now, suddenly want to expand port klang.

      Delete
    3. Surely they think these expansion of Port Klang will be a big help since theres a chance to bring large profit but theres no guarantee these project will generate profit either short or long run.

  8. Eh? Still spending on projects eventhough claim got "no money"? So expanding port klang can sure get good return of investment ma?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Now thats the question. If they spent on something that surely gives good return of investment ok la. But this project also no background on how it can give back the spending.

      Delete
    2. if got return of investment also will take a long time. with our economy condition i think its not a good idea tho

  9. Bad investment. If government already claim our country is full of debt and no money then why still spending more money for such projects?

    2. Tu yg aku tak faham tu. Apa faedah besarkan port klang tu? Ada banyak trading masuk ke?

      Delete
    3. kan. takpayah expand pun port klang tu. dah berkurun macam tu takde apa pun masalahnya. buang duit je
