ACS secretary-general Ambrose Linang
KUCHING: Churches in Sarawak will meet on Thursday (Aug 22) to pray for the nation, in conjunction with Merdeka.
About 2,000 people are expected to attend the Association of Churches in Sarawak's (ACS) annual National Day prayer service at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre here.
This year's service is hosted by the Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference of the Methodist Church, with the theme, "Pray".
ACS secretary-general Ambrose Linang called on Christians to join the service in a show of unity.
"The prayer service is to seek God's blessings to shower peace and righteousness to our state and nation.
"We pray for our lawmakers and leaders in Sarawak and Malaysia that they will continue to work harmoniously in upholding our religious freedom and to ensure that there will always be peace and prosperity," he told reporters on Tuesday (Aug 20).
Ambrose said Christian elected representatives and heads of departments had been invited to attend the service, as well as representatives from other faiths such as Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh and Bahai.
He said the service would begin with the Boys' Brigade ushering in heads of Churches and ministers to raise the Malaysia and Sarawak flags.
There will be Scripture readings and prayers in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Kenyah, Bidayuh Biatah, Iban and Mandarin to signify unity among the different churches, which are made up of different ethnic groups.
A 100-member choir from different denominations will also sing hymns during the service.
ACS is the umbrella body of Sarawak's churches and comprises the Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Seventh-Day Adventist, Borneo Evangelical Mission and Salvation Army denominations.- Star
