GEORGE TOWN: The Merdeka spirit is alive and kicking as Malaysians from all walks of life celebrate the 62nd National Day today.
Along Penang’s Street of Harmony, which is officially called Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, retiree Yeoh Hwang Sim, 71, was all smiles when talking about Merdeka Day.
“It is a day we’re all fond of, especially back in our school days.
“Even though we did not know much then, they were very happy and carefree days.
Nursing student Arisya Nadhirah Zulkifli, 18, said Malaysia is a unique country with diverse cultures.
“I’m glad and proud that we have people from different backgrounds and cultures, ” she said when met with her coursemates Sharon Teo Ching Jie, 20, and Amshavahini Subbarao, 18, at a college yester-
day.
Another student, Luke Roslee Anak Linga, 19, from Sibu, Sarawak, said he felt fortunate to have made friends from all walks of life.
“I am humbled and happy that I was able to make so many new friends from different backgrounds and cultures here, ” he said.- Star
